Trump Shooting Victims May Sue, Their Lawyer Says

A lawyer presenting two people who were injured during the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump said that lawsuits could be filed.
Joseph Feldman, an attorney at the Law Offices of Max C. Feldman firm who represents James Copenhaver, 74, and David Dutch, 57, told Fox News Digital that they may have to file suits to get “answers” which his clients are demanding in the wake of the July 13 shooting in Pennsylvania.
Copenhaver and Dutch were both critically injured after Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on Trump, the Republican nominee for president, at a campaign rally in Butler. Rally attendee Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed during the assassination attempt, with Trump receiving minor injuries to his ear.
The Secret Service has faced criticism for the security failure that resulted in Crooks being able to make his way onto a nearby roof armed with an AR-15 style rifle to shoot at Trump. Crooks also flew a drone around the rally site hours before Trump was due to speak there.
Feldman said that once the interval and external investigations have been completed, including one conducted by a bipartisan congressional task force, he will have a “little bit of a better idea exactly what we’re going to do” as a legal team for Copenhaver and Dutch.
“Answers are definitely due. They definitely want answers,” Feldman said. “I know that some of these organizations or government agencies have attempted to take some accountability for what happened that day. I don’t think enough accountability has been taken thus far.
“I think we’re going get to the bottom of that here at some point, whether that’s through the task force, through these investigations, or if we do have to file a lawsuit, we’ll definitely get answers to that process,” Feldman said.
Newsweek reached out to the Secret Service via email for comment.
Former Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on July 23, one day after she was grilled by members of Congress on the House Oversight Committee over the security lapses that led up to the assassination attempt.
At least five Secret Service agents have reportedly been placed on leave in the wake of the shooting.
Crooks was killed by the Secret Service soon after opening fire on Trump. Authorities have still not been able to establish a proper motive for the assassination attempt.
Feldman said his inquiries on behalf of his clients have been hindered as the criminal investigation is being closed to the public.
“I don’t have access to 911 calls. I don’t have access to the firearm. I don’t have access to the actual autopsy reports for Thomas Crooks. I don’t have access to even all the victims that were there in attendance that day,” Feldman said.
“At some point, we’ll have access to all this information, because that will come through during a potential lawsuit. We’ll have access to almost everything if not everything. So right now, we’re limited in our ability to—I guess we’ve taken up a full investigation. It’ll come to light.”
The AR-15-style rifle Crooks used for the shooting was given to him by his father, which he bought legally. Crooks also legally purchased 50 rounds of ammunition on the morning of the rally.
